AUDIO MAGAZINES FOR THE DISABLED
FREE AUDIO MAGAZINE
FOR ADULTS WITH
IMPAIRED VISION OR OTHER DISABILITY
Choice Magazine Listening is a nonprofit organization that provides audio recordings of memorable articles, stories, interviews, essays and poems from outstanding current magazines, completely free of charge, to blind, visually impaired, physically disabled or dyslexic adults. Based in Port Washington, NY, CML has proudly served the blind and print-disabled community since 1962.
Each year, Choice Magazine Listening produces 48 hours of recorded magazine selections; each quarterly issue contains 12 hours of listening. From a list of approximately 100 mainstream magazines and literary journals, a team of experienced editors chooses the most distinguished writing by prominent contemporary authors such as Alice Munro, T.C. Boyle, Billy Collins, Woody Allen, Jonathan Franzen, Susan Orlean, Seamus Heaney, Calvin Trillin, Annie Proulx, Garrison Keillor, and Stephen King, to name just a few. All the material chosen is well written, informative, entertaining, and enlightening—CML has high standards!
Once the editors have decided on the contents of an issue, each piece is read, unabridged, by a talented, professional audiobook narrator. The editors carefully match each selection to the narrator best able to bring that particular piece of writing to life, resulting in a rich and rewarding listening experience. CML does not use volunteer readers or synthesized voice technology. Each issue is not only a work of the highest literary merit, but an artistic performance as well.
Choice Magazine Listening is committed to keeping its unique service absolutely free. Both the recordings and the special player are provided at no cost to eligible people. Listeners who use a computer can download CML onto a thumb drive or a purchased talking-book cartridge. As a bonus, the downloaded version is available earlier than the mailed version, and back issues may be downloaded as well.
Those who are unable to download CML receive each issue by mail on an easy-to-handle talking-book cartridge that slides directly into the player. The recipient has almost two months to enjoy each issue before returning it in the plastic mailer it arrived in. No postage is required—simply pop it into the mail by the due date.
This service is free to those who are eligible.
Who is eligible? Any adult who has difficulty reading or even holding a magazine is eligible. CML's subscribers include those with conditions such as low vision, macular degeneration blindness MS, diabetes, cerebral palsy, ALS and Parkinson's. These conditions must be confirmed by 'competent authority,' which seems to include doctors, social workers and others.
